It all goes back to the birds and the bees. Fish too. And ants. It goes to all creatures that amplify their collective intelligence by forming flocks, schools, shoals, colonies and swarms. Across countless species, nature show us that social creatures, when working together as a unified dynamic system, can outperform the vast majority of individual members when solving problems and making decisions. In the field of biology, this process is referred to as “Swarm Intelligence” and it proves the old adage – many minds are better than one.
This begs the question – “Can humans swarm? Certainly we didn’t evolve the ability to swarm, for we lack the subtle connections that other species use to establish real-time feedback-loops among members. Fish detect tremors in the water around them. Bees use high speed vibrations. Birds detect motions propagating through the flock. The resulting systems are so tightly connected, the groups behaves as “super-organisms” that can think as one. And by doing so, these social species are able to make optimized decisions that far exceed the mental capacity of their individual members.
But what about us humans? Could we amplify our intelligence by thinking together as unified dynamic systems? Would we be able to make better decisions and predictions and estimations and judgments? Research shows, the answer is YES. In fact, using technology developed by Unanimous A.I., human swarms have been shown to beat the experts when predicting sporting events, financial trends, even the Oscar winners.
The technology is called Artificial Swarm Intelligence™ (or Swarm A.I.™ for short) and it enables groups to form real-time systems online, connecting as ‘human swarms’ from anywhere in the world. A combination of real-time human input and A.I. algorithms, a Swarm A.I. system combines the knowledge, wisdom, opinions, and intuitions of live human participants as a unified emergent intelligence that can generate optimized predictions, decisions, insights, and judgments. Check out this research paper, for an example how smart human swarms can be.
Where is Swarm A.I. headed? If we consider the leap in intelligence between an individual ant and a full ant colony working as one, we can expect a similar boost as we go from single individual humans to an elevated ‘super-mind’ that emerges from a large-scale swarm. Will that require hundreds of people thinking together? Thousands? Millions? We don’t yet know yet, but UNU is the first step in allowing people to pool their knowledge and insights into a single elevated intelligence.
Why is Artificial Swarm Intelligence important? In the world of A.I. research, billions are being spent by labs trying to replace human intelligence with something purely digital. While we appreciate the goal of creating a super-intelligence, this scares us. A purely artificial intelligence will have no reason to share our goals and sensibilities or our morals and values.
So we asked the question – is there a better way to build a super-intelligence? The answer is yes – by building Swarm A.I. systems that combine real-time human insights and A.I. algorithms into unified intelligent systems. We believe this is a far safer path to building systems that are smarter than ourselves, for it ensures the resulting intelligence will share our goals and aspirations, our emotions and empathy, and most importantly our morals and values. Simply put, Swarm A.I. technology creates amplified intelligence while keeping humans in the loop…
